REVIEW: Xiaomi 17
John Reilly_February 28, 2026_
The Xiaomi 17 arrives as a compact flagship that aims to deliver high-end specifications without the “Pro” or “Ultra” branding that now dominates the top tier of the Android market. On paper, it has all the expected ingredients: a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, a triple 50MP camera system co-engineered with Leica, a large 6,330mAh silicon-carbon battery and 100W wired charging.
So, the question isn’t whether the Xiaomi 17 is powerful. It clearly is. The more important question is whether it offers a balanced overall experience, and whether its compact dimensions make it a smart alternative to the increasingly large phones most people now carry. After spending some time with the device, the answer is mostly positive.
Design & Build Quality
The Xiaomi 17 follows a now-familiar flat-edged slab design that closely mirrors current industry trends. There is no avoiding the comparison to Apple’s Pro models, particularly in the camera module layout. That said, Xiaomi has added its own finishes and detailing to avoid feeling like a direct clone.
At 151.1 x 71.8 x 8.1mm and weighing 191g, this is a relatively compact flagship by 2026 standards. The matte glass back is smooth without being slippery, and it resists fingerprints better than glossy alternatives. The colour-matched metal frame feels solid, and button placement on the right-hand side is conventional, with a volume rocker and a power button that doubles as an AI shortcut.
The rear camera module houses three 50MP sensors alongside a dual-tone flash, laser autofocus and colour spectrum sensor. It is prominent but not excessively so. Wireless charging is supported at up to 50W, with 20W reverse wireless charging available.
On the front, the 6.3″ LTPO AMOLED display is flat, which many users will appreciate, and ships with a pre-applied screen protector. The ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader is fast and reliable.
Software Features
The Xiaomi 17 runs Android 16 with HyperOS 3 layered on top. As with any Android skin, HyperOS is highly customisable, offering adjustments to grid layouts, themes, icon packs and animations.
There are pre-installed apps, but most can be removed or disabled. The app drawer includes categorisation options and a fixed search bar at the bottom. AI features are integrated throughout the system. Tools such as AI writing assistance, image expansion and live translation are built in.
Xiaomi promises four years of major Android updates and six years of security patches.
Performance
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, delivers performance you’d expect from a flagship device. Everyday tasks such as browsing and video streaming are handled with complete ease.
Gaming performance is strong. Demanding titles run at high frame rates. Xiaomi’s Stereoscopic Annular Cold Pump cooling system is designed to improve heat dissipation compared to traditional vapour chambers.
Cameras
The Xiaomi 17’s camera system consists of three 50MP rear sensors: a wide camera with an f/1.7 aperture, a telephoto with 2.6x optical zoom and OIS, and an ultrawide.
In good lighting, the main camera produces detailed images. The telephoto lens performs well for portraits, and the ultrawide maintains reasonable detail and colour consistency.
Low-light photography is handled impressively, with night mode reducing noise while keeping colour tones natural.
Video recording supports up to 8K at 30fps, though 4K at 30fps offers the best balance of clarity and stabilisation.
Battery Life
One of the Xiaomi 17’s strongest features is its 6,330mAh silicon-carbon battery. Despite the phone’s compact dimensions, battery life comfortably extends through a full day of heavy use and can stretch into a second day under lighter workloads.
100W wired charging can refill the battery in roughly 35 minutes. Wireless charging at 50W is faster than most competitors, and reverse wireless charging is genuinely useful.
Conclusion
The Xiaomi 17 is a well-rounded compact flagship. It combines strong performance, reliable cameras, long battery life and very fast charging in a relatively small chassis. Its main drawbacks are ergonomic rather than technical.
So, in the end, if you’re looking for flagship specifications in a smaller form factor, the Xiaomi 17 is a very solid option.
